In amongst the sheer feats of athleticism and fortitude at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio, we can expect to see a number of product innovations developed by top sports brands as a result of years’ worth of rigorous scientific research. The most notable of these is Nike’s AeroSwift Tape, which will make a debut in Rio as part of athletes’ competition kit. Although it looks like KT tape, Aeroswift is actually designed to improve the athlete’s aerodynamic, by reducing drag around the body. The tape is placed in strategic places (dependent on the athlete, and their sport), and raised rubber nodes are designed to move air more efficiently around the body. With sports such as Track and Field and the Olympic Marathon being won by such slim margins, every small margin counts.
It’s always worth remembering that behind every athlete’s spirit, drive and determination, there’s a team of expert product developers- reflective of the Art & Science approach we favour at The Gild.
