Celebrating a legend

Celebrating a legend

Last month, the news of Prince’s passing shook New Yorkers (and the world) and moved much of the city to impromptu celebrations of the late icon, from drink specials at bars to purple balloons to tribute concerts. A few days after his death, I was lucky to attend a screening of Purple Rain at a local movie theater in the East Village, and will likely never forget the experience. Much of the absurdity of the 1984 film has aged into campy, golden goodness and I’m pretty sure everyone in the audience was having a BALL as fellow movie-goers were dancing in the aisles, clapping, and laughing. It felt like a true party in honor of a legend, well suited to the man who brought us “But life is just a party, and parties weren’t meant to last.”
